Infertility is becoming a bigger concern for many couples in India. Structural issues in the uterus or ovaries can significantly impact fertility. The most common causes are ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and endometrial or cervical polyps. While these conditions are usually non-cancerous, they can still affect fertility and make it harder to conceive naturally. The good news is that, with the right diagnosis and treatment, many women can have healthy pregnancies.
Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on the ovaries. Most are harmless and go away on their own. However, conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which causes many small cysts, can disrupt ovulation. This is a common cause of infertility in Indian women, particularly in urban areas where factors like stress and weight gain lead to hormonal imbalances.
Other types, such as endometriotic cysts (endometriomas), can also harm egg quality and ovarian function. These may need medication or surgical removal, especially if they are large or painful.
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths found in the uterus. They are quite common among women of reproductive age. Not all fibroids affect fertility, but submucosal fibroids, which grow into the uterine cavity, can hinder embryo implantation or raise the risk of miscarriage. Larger fibroids may block the fallopian tubes or change the shape of the uterus.
Treatment may include medication, minimally invasive surgery (such as hysteroscopic myomectomy), or observation, depending on the size, location, and symptoms.
Endometrial or cervical polyps are small, soft growths of tissue. They can disrupt the normal environment of the uterus and lower the chances of embryo implantation. Polyps are often removed through a simple hysteroscopic procedure.
If you have been trying to conceive for over a year (or for six months if you are over 35) and have symptoms like irregular periods, pelvic pain, or heavy bleeding, talk to a fertility specialist. At our clinic, we use advanced imaging techniques like ultrasound and hysteroscopy to diagnose and treat these conditions accurately.
Infertility caused by cysts, fibroids, or polyps is manageable. With timely intervention and a personalized treatment plan, becoming a parent is often within reach.
